It depends on which part has failed rather than on the age of the unit. A heating element, a thermostat, a pilot that will not stay lit or a leaking valve are ordinary repairs. A tank that has rusted through is not, because the leak is the tank itself and no repair holds. We tell you which one you have before any work starts, and if it is the second we will say so rather than sell you a repair that will not last.

Two things, and only two. Check whether the breaker for the heater has tripped and reset it once. On a gas unit, check whether the pilot has gone out. If the breaker trips again, if the pilot will not stay lit, or if there is any water where there should not be, stop there and send us the problem. Repeatedly resetting a breaker that keeps tripping is how a fault becomes a fire.
