How long should I leave liquid sosa in a clogged toilet?

Our answer is not a number of minutes, because we would not put it in a toilet at all. Caustic soda gives off real heat as it reacts, and a ceramic bowl can crack from the temperature difference alone. It also tends to sit in the bowl rather than reach the blockage, because a toilet has an S-trap holding water between the two. So it burns what it touches, which may include you, and often leaves the clog exactly where it was. In a metal or old plastic waste pipe it can do damage you only find later.

What actually clears a blocked toilet, then?

In order, and the first two cost nothing:

• A flange plunger, the kind with a rubber sleeve that folds out, seated properly and worked firmly rather than quickly
• Washing-up liquid and a bucket of hot but NOT boiling water, poured from about waist height
• A drain auger fed down the trap, which is where the blockage usually is
• A call to us, if the same toilet blocks again within a few weeks, because that is a sign the problem is further down the line rather than in the bowl

What does declogging mean?

Declogging is clearing a blocked drain: getting out whatever is stopping the water, whether that is grease in the kitchen line, hair and soap in a floor drain or something that went down the toilet. Unclogging means the same thing. Declogging is simply the word most people use for it in the Philippines, and in Tagalog you would say pagtanggal ng bara. Do you do declogging for canals and street drainage?

No. The declogging we do is inside the property: toilets, kitchen and bathroom sinks, shower and floor drains, and the main line from the house out to the street. A blocked canal or public drain belongs to the barangay or the city engineering office, and they are the people to report it to. If water is backing up into your house because the street drain is full, send us the problem anyway and we will tell you which side of the property line the blockage is on.

What is a clean-out, and do I have one?

A clean-out is a capped opening on the drain pipe that lets a plumber reach inside the line without taking a toilet or a sink off. Many houses have one near where the drain leaves the building, sometimes under a floor tile or a plant pot, and many older houses were never given one at all. If you know where yours is, tell us in your message, because it is where the snake goes in when the blockage is further down than the fixture.

What do you use instead of chemicals?

Mechanical snakes, hydro jetting and eco-friendly solutions. A snake or a jet removes the blockage; a chemical tries to dissolve it and attacks the pipe while it works. The difference matters most in older houses, where the waste pipe is the part you cannot easily replace.

Do you repair toilets, or only unblock them?

Both. A toilet that is blocked, overflowing, slow to empty or gurgling is the work this page describes.
